OCTOBER Activity Calendar – Lake Mac Naturalist

  • Oct 5 at 8pm The Night Sky at Ash Hollow SHP, up on the ridge. Amateur astronomer Doug Wolford will bring his telescope and I will bring binoculars to look at the moon and stars. Oct 6 is the backup night.
  • Oct 6 at 4pm Nature Walk: Why do the leaves change color? At the west Lake Ogallala campground (the primitive side). We will meet at the main boat ramp and check out the fall colors.
  • Oct 11 from 5-7pm Pumpkin Carving at the Lake McConaughy Visitor Center. BYOP – Bring Your Own Pumpkin. Carving tools provided, as well as recipes for roasting pumpkin seeds.
  • Oct 12 from 2-4pm Pumpkin Painting at the Lake McConaughy Visitor Center. Bring the kids (and a pumpkin). Paint and brushes provided.
  • Oct 12 from 5-7pm Pumpkin Carving at the Lake McConaughy Visitor Center. BYOP – Bring Your Own Pumpkin. Carving tools provided, as well as recipes for roasting pumpkin seeds.
  • Oct 13 from 1-3pm Pumpkin Painting at the Ash Hollow SHP Visitor Center. Bring the kids (and a pumpkin). Paint and brushes provided.
  • Oct 13 at 4pm Nature Walk: Wild Gourds at Ash Hollow SHP. Meet at the picnic area near Spring Pond. We will walk the trails to find some buffalo gourds at the base of the bluffs.
  • Oct 19 from 1-4pm Creepy Critter Carnival at the Lake McConaughy Visitor Center. Bring the kids to play games for prizes and to learn a bit about snakes, spiders, bats, owls, and more.

  • Oct 20 at 4pm Nature Walk: Nebraska Reptiles at Spring Park between Lemoyne and Cedar Vue on Highway 92. Tomorrow is Reptile Day, so come tell everyone about your favorite reptiles, and I will tell you mine!
  • Oct 26 from 11am-5pm Halloween at the Hollow at Ash Hollow SHP. (Not my event, but I’ve helped out this year and hope to see you there.) Games, costume contests, trunk or treat, karaoke, and more! Small entrance fee.
  • Oct 27 from 1-3pm A Batty Afternoon at the Lake McConaughy Visitor Center. Learn about Nebraska bats, make some batty crafts, and talk about bat houses.
  • Oct 27 at 4pm Nature Walk: Bat Facts at Lake Ogallala Hike/Bike trail. Another event in honor of Bat Week. Let me dispel some myths about bats and tell you some things you might not know.
